The Emergency Rabies Clinic held by the Humane Society of Real County vaccinated 338 animals for rabies on Wednesday March 10, 2010. Other shots for distemper, parvo, etc. were also provided at a reduced rate.
We are very grateful to Dr. C. H. Arnum, Jr. and vet tech, Anna Davenport, of Southwest Texas Veterinary Clinic in Uvalde, for providing this outstanding service to our community in such a timely manner.

Folks were in line at 2:30 p.m. and vaccinations were given until 7:00 p.m. We are grateful to The American Legion for providing the tables and chairs. A big thank you to Fred McNeil, Superintendent, and Rusty Baldwin, Principal, of LISD for their cooperation in providing the pavilion for the clinic. Thank you to Constable Jim Wilson for traffic control!

The HSRC could not have held this clinic without the dedicated efforts of its wonderful volunteers: Jennifer and Richard Rubio, Jacky Thompson, Sonya Thompson, Yvonne Herod, Mary Walker-Chyle, and Pat Walzel.
An additional 250 rabies shots were done in 2009 with our spay/neuter program along with an additional 250 given at the April, 2009 regular vaccination clinic.

The HSRC spay/neutered some 150 feral cats in the last months of 2009 and 44 so far in 2010, thereby reducing the rabies exposure in our community. Please note that ALL feral cats that have been spayed/neutered have their left ear tipped as a sign that they have been fixed and have been given their rabies shots.

Additional Info: Per the HSUS and ASPCA
Each time we spay/neuter the impact is great – a female cat and her offspring can reproduce 420,000 more cats in 7 years. A female dog reproduces some 20,000 – 40,000 offspring in her lifetime, depending on the size of the dog.
We urge the public to contact us regarding spay neuter. The form along with pricing is on website and can be downloaded, filled in, and mailed to P. O. Box 1759, Leakey, Texas 78873 or brought to the HSRC Thrift Shop for processing. Prices for cats are $25, any dog under 40 lbs. is $35.

“We are pleased to have provided the emergency clinic in a timely manner. We appreciate the patience of all those attending. Rabies is a deadly disease with no cure and practically no survival rate. If there is interest in holding another clinic soon, we will respond accordingly said HSRC President Linda Manuel.”

‘Everybody and their dog showed up!’

PENNY MAGUIRE EDITOR

Leakey Superintendent Fred McNiel drew a chuckle last week when he arrived at the Rabies Clinic with his pets and said, “Looks like everybody and their dog showed up.” Linda Manuel with the Humane Society of Real County reported 338 animals were vaccinated. Other shots for distemper, parvo, etc. were also provided at a reduced rate.

“We are very grateful to Dr. C. H. Arnum, Jr. and vet tech, Anna Davenport, of Southwest Texas Veterinary Clinic in Uvalde, for providing this outstanding service to our community in such a timely manner. Folks were in line at 2:30 p.m. and vaccinations were given until 7:00 p.m.,” stated Manuel.

The clinic became a community effort after rabies cases were reported in the area. Manuel said the school provided the pavilion and members of the American Legion provided chairs and tables.

The large turnout presented a few parking problems and Constable Jim Wilson stepped up to provide traffic control.

“The HSRC could not have held this clinic without the volunteer efforts of Jennifer and Richard Rubio, Jacky Thompson, Sonya Thompson, Yvonne Herod, Mary Walker-Chyle, and Pat Walzel,” said Manuel.

The HSRC has worked to help spay/neuter about 200 feral cats since 2009, thereby reducing the rabies exposure in our community. Manuel reports ALL feral cats that have been spayed/neutered have their left ear tipped as a sign that they have been fixed and have been given their rabies shots.

“Each time we spay/ neuter, the impact is great - a female cat and her offspring can reproduce 420,000 more cats in 7 years,” she said. A female dog reproduces some 20,000 - 40,000 offspring in her lifetime, depending on the size of the dog.

The local humane society urges the public to contact them regarding spay /neuter. The form along with pricing is on their website and can be downloaded, filled in, and mailed to P. O. Box 1759, Leakey, Texas 78873 or brought to the HSRC Thrift Shop for processing. The thrift shop is located on U.S. Hwy. 83 S. just south of the courthouse in Leakey. Prices for cats are $25, any dog under 40 lbs. is $35.

The society, formed just a few years ago, welcomes donations in any amount. The City of Leakey does not have a veterinarian who works in the area. The Society’s efforts in providing the emergency clinic was appreciated by many in the community.

Manuel also appreciated the support of the local media in getting the message out to the citizens.
